2023- Emmanuel Macron criticised for giving Légion d’honneur to Jeff Bezos- 2023

It is true that French President Emmanuel Macron awarded Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon, with the Légion d’honneur, France’s highest honour, at a discreet ceremony held at the Élysée Palace on Thursday, December 12, 2019. The ceremony was not publicly announced and was considered a private occasion, attended by VIP guests and influential business leaders.

According to The Guardian, Bezos had been designated as a member of the Légion d’honneur about 10 years ago, prior to Macron’s presidency, but had not collected the medal. The ceremony was held to hand over the ribboned medal he should have received earlier.

The timing of the ceremony coincided with a day of industrial action across France in protest of Macron’s plan to raise the retirement age to 64. The ceremony was not included in the president’s official diary and was organized with the Bezos family to coincide with his visit to Paris.

It is worth noting that around 300 foreigners are admitted to the Legion d’honneur every year, including notable figures in the arts, sciences, politics, and business.

Nearly 1000 kilometers of traffic jams in France by holidaymakers

People on their way to their holiday destination can experience considerable delays in France. Around noon, holiday traffic in that country reached a traffic peak of 955 kilometers, reports the ANWB.

In Switzerland, there was an hour and a half traffic jams at the famous Gotthard tunnel. The delay decreased to about half an hour by mid-afternoon.

People were allowed to join an hour and a half to drive to Slovenia in front of the Austrian Karawankentunnel, which also slowed down in the afternoon.

Major floods in China, province heralds highest alarm

Southern China’s Jiangxi Province has issued the highest flood alarm. It is warned that dams can fail and that extreme flooding is possible on several rivers. China has been plagued by floods for weeks, caused by heavy rain.

In Jinagxi, some 5 million people have now been affected by the floods. According to state media, a total of 34 million Chinese have been affected by the storm. At least 121 people are said to have died or gone missing. The storm is moving further east along the Yangtze River.

The Hong Kong newspaper The South China Morning Post made this report about the disaster:

Poyang Lake, the largest freshwater lake in China, is located in Jiangxi Province. According to the authorities, the water level could exceed the record in 1998. In that year, the worst floods in decades were in China: 4,000 people died and tens of millions were affected by the disaster.

Wuhan, the city where the coronavirus first spread, also suffers from severe weather. Early this week, the city raised the flood alert to the next-highest level.
